Following the announcement of a new US proposal for a peace plan, Germany, France and the UK are pressing for close involvement in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Following a telephone conversation between German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, German government spokesman Stefan Kornelius explained that all four had welcomed the US efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

However, they had also agreed "that any agreement concerning the European states, the European Union or NATO requires the consent of the European partners or a consensus of the allies", they said in a written statement.

Line of contact should be the starting point for understanding

Merz, Macron and Starmer wanted to continue to pursue the goal of safeguarding "vital European and Ukrainian interests" in the long term. This includes, among other things, that the so-called line of contact between the troops of both sides must be the starting point for an understanding. In addition, the Ukrainian armed forces must remain capable of effectively defending Ukraine's sovereignty.

With a 28-point peace plan, the US administration of President Donald Trump wants to end the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, which has been going on for three and a half years. Several media such as the US news portal "Axios" published the list, the content of which has also been confirmed by government representatives from the USA and Ukraine. The plan contains numerous proposals that are likely to be difficult for Kiev to accept - such as: no NATO membership, a smaller army and permanent territorial cessions.
