The head of the military junta ruling the West African country, Mamadi Doumbouya, pardoned Camara for "health reasons", according to a decree read out on state television on Friday.
The ex-dictator was sentenced to 20 years in prison in July 2024 for a massacre in 2009. A court found him guilty of "crimes against humanity". Seven other defendants were sentenced to long prison terms of up to life imprisonment.
Moussa Dadis Camara was in power in Guinea between 2008 and 2009. Under his rule, the military killed more than 150 people at an opposition rally in the capital Conakry in September 2009, according to a UN investigation. At least 109 women were raped.
