The expansion of Bern station has been delayed by two years and will be significantly more expensive than planned. Commissioning is now scheduled for 2031, with additional costs of CHF 200 to 250 million, as announced by SBB on Thursday.

In a press release, SBB cited unexpected hurdles in the construction work as the reasons for the delay. These included structural challenges and old, incomplete construction plans, as well as the discovery of pollutants.
Because the construction time is being extended, the costs are also rising. These are also increasing due to "challenging structural and geological conditions", as SBB went on to write.
The dependency on neighboring projects is also high. For example, two objections to the new station access at Hirschengraben are pending.
Most recently, SBB had planned to open the station at the end of 2029. The budgeted total costs in 2022 still amounted to CHF 1.2 billion.
The City of Bern and Regionalverkehr Bern-Solothurn (RBS) are also involved in the Zukunft Bahnhof Bern (ZBB) project.
