Several explosions have occurred in Iran amid growing war concerns. The Iranian news agency Tasnim reported that one person was killed and 14 injured in an explosion in the port metropolis of Bandar Abbas in the south of the country on the Persian Gulf.
Eyewitnesses also reported an explosion and rising smoke near the capital Tehran. According to a representative of the authorities, however, only reeds by a river had caught fire, as reported by Iranian media.
The Iranian online portal "Nur News" also reported that a gas explosion had occurred in the city of Ahwas in the south-west of the country, citing the head of the fire department. According to the information, four people were killed.
The Tasnim news agency, which is close to the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), denied rumors that the explosion in Bandar Abbas was an attempted attack on the commander of the IRGC navy, Aliresa Tangsiri.
The state news agency Irna published a photo of a partially destroyed front of a multi-storey residential building. The reason for the explosion was a gas leak, state radio reported.
A three-day naval maneuver by the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in the Persian Gulf is due to begin shortly, with China and Russia also taking part. The background to this is military tensions. US President Donald Trump had deployed a fleet including an aircraft carrier to the region. The Republican had repeatedly threatened the leadership in Tehran to intervene in the country after the security apparatus brutally cracked down on protests.
