The FDP is calling on the federal government to take more resolute action against illegal migration. The delegates adopted a position paper to this effect on Saturday in Tenero TI by 228 votes to 4.

Lucerne Councillor of States Damian Müller presented the paper together with Vaud Cantonal Councillor Florence Bettschart-Narbel. Migration is an emotional topic and not an easy one because it concerns the fate of people, said Müller.

The paper has the motto "tough but fair" and only refers to illegal migration. A central element is the humanitarian tradition, said Müller. A persecuted person should receive protection. However, there should be no place for economic migrants.

The asylum system is being abused with the "massive complicity of the FDJP", said Müller. People who were not granted asylum should be encouraged to return home and not remain in Switzerland. An efficient repatriation system would serve as a deterrent.
