The FDP wants to do more to combat crime in Switzerland. To this end, it adopted a security policy position paper with twelve demands at its delegates' meeting in Geneva on Saturday.

These include the abolition of conditional sentences for violent and sexual offenses, more police and judicial staff and an extension of provisional detention to 48 hours. National Councillor Jacqueline de Quattro from the canton of Vaud emphasized to around 300 delegates that the safety of the population must once again be a priority. International criminal networks have long been active in Switzerland.

Bernese Councillor Philippe Müller also demanded that the right of asylum should not be misused for criminal activities. The preservation of the Schengen and Dublin agreements, faster border controls and stronger readmission agreements are also among the demands.

The paper also calls for harsher prison sentences, additional prison places, the use of electronic surveillance for certain violent criminals and zero tolerance for drug trafficking. The delegates adopted the position paper by a large majority.

At the start of the meeting, Co-Presidents Benjamin Mühlemann and Susanne Vincenz-Stauffacher advocated a pragmatic course for the party. They did not want to make any populist promises, but wanted to win the elections and prevent a left-dominated national government.
