The FDP is withdrawing all its ministers from the federal government. They wanted to submit their resignations to the Federal President as a group, announced parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr in Berlin. The FDP is thus ending the three-party alliance of the traffic light coalition.

Dürr said that it had not been possible for the traffic light coalition to decide on the direction of an "economic turnaround". The Chancellor's proposals had not been enough to get Germany back on track economically. Now it was up to the voters to decide the direction of the country. Dürr said that the FDP in the Bundestag would continue to be constructive for the remainder of the election period. Individual projects would then be discussed between all democratic parliamentary groups
Previously, Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had announced that he would kick Finance Minister and FDP leader Christian Lindner out of the cabinet. Lindner in turn declared that Scholz had thereby terminated cooperation with the entire FDP. In Berlin, Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck spoke of the break-up of the "traffic light" coalition.
Voters can now look forward to early elections in March. The Bundestag is to vote on a vote of confidence on January 15, said Scholz. It is expected that he will lose this.
In this case, the Chancellor can ask the Federal President to dissolve the Bundestag. Scholz said that the Bundestag could clear the way for early elections. These could take place by the end of March at the latest.
Scholz now wants to approach the CDU/CSU in order to still push through important political projects this year.
