More Ukrainian refugees in Switzerland should take up employment. The Federal Council has instructed the Department of Justice and Police to draw up a consultation draft by February 2025 with legislative amendments that promote work integration.

The Federal Council made this decision on the basis of the report by the evaluation group on Status S, which it took note of on Friday. The group, led by former Aargau cantonal councillor Urs Hofmann, was set up by the then Minister of Justice Karin Keller-Sutter to quickly evaluate and process experiences with Status S.

Parliament had called for simpler procedures for Ukrainian refugees to take up gainful employment in Switzerland. The councillors called for the current work permit requirement to be replaced by a registration requirement.

Refugees with S status should also be required to register with the public employment service. People in employment should be able to change cantons and be obliged to take part in integration measures.
