The aim is to increase the personal responsibility of the insured in order to curb the rise in healthcare costs.
The amendment to the Health Insurance Act (KVG) also provides for an adjustment mechanism: In future, the deductible is to be increased as soon as the insured person's cost sharing falls below a threshold of 13.5 percent of gross benefits.
In December 2024, Parliament voted in favor of increasing the minimum health insurance deductible. This is intended to better reflect the current cost situation in basic insurance.
The last increase in the minimum deductible was in 2004, from CHF 230 to CHF 300. In 2024, 45% of adults chose the lowest deductible, as the Federal Council also announced.
