Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider has expressed her delight that the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York has adopted a declaration on women's rights. This is "powerful" and "political".

The declaration is intended to respect, protect and promote the equal rights and self-determination of women and girls. This year's session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women is of particular significance as it marks the 30th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. The Beijing documents form the most important international framework for gender equality policy.

During her stay, the Federal Councillor also had a number of bilateral meetings, including with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and with Sima Sami Bahous, the Executive Director of the UN Women's Organization. She also took part in various side events and visited a contact point for victims of violence.
