The federal government intends to review asylum applications from Syrians again from September 1. In a first step, however, this will only apply to those in need of protection who do not claim refugee-relevant grounds for asylum, as announced by the State Secretariat for Migration.

Decisions will also be resumed for criminal offenders and people who pose a threat to Switzerland's internal or external security, it added.

Following the fall of Syria's long-term ruler Bashar al-Assad in mid-December 2024, the State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) immediately suspended all asylum procedures and decisions for asylum seekers from Syria. At the time, it was stated that it was not possible to verify whether there were grounds for asylum.

The SEM is "continuing to monitor the situation in Syria carefully" and will resume its decision-making activities for other categories of people from Syria at a later date.
