The Federal Statistical Office will cut around 40 of its current 700 jobs by 2028. This is due to cost-cutting measures adopted by Parliament and a structural deficit at the Office.

As the Federal Council announced on Friday, the Federal Statistical Office must reduce its activities in order to overcome its structural deficit. The federal government therefore decided on Friday to refrain from collecting several statistics. In certain cases, alternative measures will be examined.
The cost-cutting measures should lead to gradual savings from 2026, which will amount to around CHF 13 million per year by 2028. The job cuts are to be offset as far as possible by natural departures and internal fluctuations.
It has been known since February that the Neuchâtel-based Federal Office will have to cut back on services. Over the past few months, it has now drawn up a plan to reduce its tasks.
