After Ellen Sirleaf Johnson in Liberia and Samia Suluhu Hassan in Tanzania, she is the third woman to hold a presidential office in Africa. The country's previous vice president was elected at the end of last year with 58.1 percent of the vote.

Nandi-Ndaitwah has announced that during her five-year term of office, she intends to focus on combating the high level of youth unemployment and making far-reaching investments in "green" energy, agriculture and infrastructure. She is considered an advocate for women's and children's rights and has held several cabinet posts in the past, including Minister of the Environment and Minister of International Affairs.
