The flu epidemic has hit Switzerland. According to the Federal Office of Public Health, the corresponding threshold values were exceeded last week. The flu epidemic is therefore starting earlier this year than in previous years.

Last week, 846 laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza were registered in Switzerland and Liechtenstein, according to figures released by the Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) on Wednesday. This is around two thirds more than a week ago.

This means that the FOPH registered 9.3 cases of flu per 100,000 inhabitants. Last year, this threshold was reached around two weeks later.

Regionally, the highest number of confirmed cases per 100,000 people was in the cantons of Ticino (44.30), Valais (15.35) and Basel-Stadt (13.41); the lowest in the cantons of Schwyz (1.18), Schaffhausen (2.26) and Uri (2.61).
