At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, the media office of the Canton of Basel-Landschaft's Department of Construction and Environmental Protection reported that the experts are currently clarifying whether the measures introduced should be maintained. It is unclear what caused the foam to form. It is unclear whether it will ever be possible to find out.

On Friday evening, there had already been anomalies in the inflow to the WWTP in Füllinsdorf, as the Department of Construction and Environmental Protection announced on Saturday. On Saturday, foam had then entered the river via the discharge of treated wastewater. A section of the Ergholz several hundred meters long was affected.

In order to relieve the Füllinsdorf sewage treatment plant, its outflow has been diverted to the Rhine sewage treatment plant since Saturday. The authorities' hope that the situation would normalize overnight has not yet been fulfilled. Foam is still forming on the Ergholz.

Until Sunday, it was unclear whether the foam contained harmful substances and whether it had entered the river as a result of misconduct. According to the Environment Directorate, no fish have been harmed so far.
