Niklaus Blattner, former Vice-Chairman of the Governing Board of the Swiss National Bank (SNB), died on January 21, 2025 at the age of 81. This is according to an obituary published in the "Basler Zeitung".

The SNB paid tribute to Blattner's significant achievements, in particular the establishment of the Financial Stability division and the initiation of the 9th banknote series. "The SNB was able to benefit from his rich academic knowledge and wealth of experience in the financial sector," the obituary stated. Blattner was a member of the SNB Governing Board from January 1, 2001 and was its Vice Chairman from July 1, 2003. He retired from office on April 30, 2007.
From 1979 to 2002, Blattner was Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Basel, where he founded and headed the Research Center for Labor and Industrial Economics. Prior to that, from 1976 to 1987, he headed the Economic Service at the former Federal Office for Industry, Trade and Labor (now Seco). He was then a member of the Executive Board of the Swiss Bankers Association, of which he was Chairman and Delegate of the Board of Directors from 1998.
The University of Basel and the SNB expressed their condolences to his family. "We remember Niklaus Blattner with deep respect for his academic achievements and his outstanding personality. Niklaus Blattner will remain in our grateful memory," it said on the University of Basel website.
