The imprisoned Iranian human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi is "between life and death", according to her supporters in Paris.

"For the first time, we have to state that Narges Mohammadi's life is in real danger," said Jonathan Dagher, Middle East regional director of the journalists' organization Reporters Without Borders, at a press conference.

According to the Nobel laureate's foundation, her lawyer, Chirinne Ardakani, said: "We are not only fighting for her freedom. We are fighting to keep her heart beating." Her supporters have formally appealed to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, to intercede on Mohammadi's behalf.

Mohammadi was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her work against the oppression of women and the death penalty in Iran.

Human rights activist imprisoned again

The 54-year-old is being held in a hospital in Sandzhan in north-western Iran. She is being held in the central prison there. According to people close to her, Mohammadi was transferred to an intensive care unit due to acute heart problems. She is suffering from persistently unstable blood pressure levels and severe nausea, it was reported at the weekend.

Her brother, Hamid-Reza Mohammadi, had already warned in April that her state of health was worrying.

According to her lawyer, the Nobel Peace Prize winner was sentenced again at the beginning of February to several years in prison for conspiracy and propaganda activities. She is also banned from leaving the country for two years.
