France is commemorating the victims of the series of Islamist terror attacks in the greater Paris area ten years ago with minutes of silence, bell ringing and wreath-laying ceremonies.

"The pain remains", wrote French President Emmanuel Macron on X. "France remembers." Macron took part in several memorial ceremonies held throughout the day at all the sites of the attacks for the 130 people who died.

France is in a state of emergency on the tenth anniversary of the terrorist attack. Numerous people laid flowers and placed candles in front of the sites of the attack and at the central Place de la République. The bells of all Catholic churches are to ring in the evening. A minute's silence will also be held at the French national team's match against Ukraine in the evening. The day before, the Eiffel Tower and other monuments in the city had already been lit up in the French national colors as a sign of remembrance.

Extremists killed in concert hall, bars and restaurants

In the series of attacks on November 13, 2015, extremists killed 130 people and injured 350 others. They carried out a massacre in the Bataclan concert hall and spread terror in bars and restaurants. Three suicide bombers blew themselves up during an international football match between Germany and France at the Stade de France.

The terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) later claimed responsibility for the attacks. Probably the only survivor of the terrorist commando was sentenced to life imprisonment in a mammoth trial. 19 other participants and helpers were also found guilty.

Attacks leave their mark on France to this day

The series of terrorist attacks had a profound impact on France. It was interpreted as an attack on personal freedom and the French way of life. Ten years later, the traces of the attacks are still clearly visible. Some survivors and bereaved families are still suffering from the traumatic experiences. The presence of armed security forces and controls in public spaces have increased, as has awareness of the risk of attack.
