France is calling for a NATO exercise on Greenland. This became known this morning from Élysée circles. Paris is therefore prepared to contribute to such an exercise. From Paris' point of view, the reason for a NATO exercise is that the security of the Arctic region is taken seriously.

Denmark recently asked Nato for a permanent presence on the island. According to the news agency Ritzau, Danish head of government Mette Frederiksen said that the increased Nato presence in the Baltic Sea and the Baltic States could serve as a model. Denmark and Greenland had previously proposed an alliance mission in the Arctic.

Last week, international soldiers, including from Germany and France, had already come to Greenland for an exploratory tour lasting several days. This was an exploratory mission under Danish leadership and not a NATO exercise.

Trump had recently left no doubt that he wanted to take possession of Greenland, which belongs to Denmark, by any means necessary. In response to the solidarity of European NATO countries with Denmark and Greenland, he announced that he would impose punitive tariffs from February 1 in order to break down resistance to the sale of the Arctic island to the USA.
