France will recognize Palestine as a state, according to its President Emmanuel Macron. "I will solemnly announce this in September of this year before the United Nations General Assembly," Macron announced on Platform X. "Peace is possible," he continued. It is up to the French to show this together with the Israelis, the Palestinians, the European and international partners.

In his post, Macron emphasized the urgent need to end the war in the Gaza Strip and provide aid to the civilian population. In addition, the demilitarization of Hamas must be ensured. Macron wrote that the viability of a Palestinian state must be ensured. "There is no alternative", it reads in bold in the article.

Macron publishes letter to Abbas

In his post, the French president shared a letter to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. In view of the promises that Abbas had made to him, he had written to him to express his determination to proceed further, Macron wrote.

The French President had previously held out the prospect of recognizing Palestine as a state. He had originally mentioned the UN conference on the two-state solution in New York as a possible date for the announcement of the decision; however, the conference was postponed from June to the end of this month. Macron had also said that he would also like pro-Palestinian states to recognize Israel and that "mutual recognition" by several states could take place at the conference.

Norway and the two EU countries Ireland and Spain recently announced that they would recognize Palestine as a separate state. Almost 150 UN member states have already done so. However, important Western countries are not among them, including the UN veto powers USA and Great Britain. Germany does not recognize Palestine as a state either. Israel is not recognized by Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Syria, for example.

Macron repeatedly expressed his concern about the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip and criticized Israel's actions in the sealed-off coastal area. The World Health Organization (WHO) warned of a deadly hunger crisis in the Gaza Strip on Wednesday.

As German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius said after Macron's visit to Berlin on Wednesday, Macron, together with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU), appealed to the Israeli government to "immediately initiate a ceasefire and take humanitarian measures in the immediate vicinity". France recently signed the appeal of 28 states to end the Gaza war, which Germany did not join.

Pending telephone call between Paris, Berlin and London

The situation now appears to be coming to a head - according to a statement from the British government, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to coordinate the situation in the Gaza Strip in an urgent telephone call with allies France and Germany.

Shortly beforehand, the USA had recalled its negotiating team from Qatar's capital Doha. Hamas is not willing to reach a ceasefire, wrote US special envoy Steve Witkoff on Platform X.

Recognition is seen as an important incentive for the Palestinian side to make concessions in peace negotiations. Critics of recognition complain that the Palestinian territories lack important criteria for such a step. For example, the border between Israel and the Palestinians is still disputed. This also applies to the political status of East Jerusalem.
