France's head of government Sébastien Lecornu, who has returned to office, has justified his surprising move with a sense of duty and the acute crisis in the country. After his resignation on Monday, he declared that his mission was over, said the politician, whom President Emmanuel Macron reappointed as prime minister on Friday evening. But he had changed his mind due to the pressure of having to present a draft budget to parliament by Monday. There were also not many other candidates for the post of head of government.

"I have no other ambition than to get us out of this situation, which is objectively very difficult for everyone," said Lecornu in the Paris suburb of L'Haÿ-les-Roses. His primary task, he said, was to get next year's budget and a few other urgent matters off the ground. "So I give myself a pretty clear task. And then either the political forces help me with it and we work together - or they don't."
Despite the good performance of left-wing parties in the 2024 parliamentary elections, Macron had repeatedly appointed heads of government who were far from the left camp - including Lecornu. They had to give up due to a lack of majorities.
Government needs to be formed quickly
Lecornu must now put together a cabinet quickly over the weekend. "I think we need a government that also reflects parliamentary reality. That is essential, that is democracy." Despite its strong performance in the parliamentary elections, the left-wing camp has been virtually unrepresented in governments ever since. Lecornu now wants to change this.
The government is already facing a vote of no confidence from the opposition at the beginning of the week. This means that Lecornu and his future government team could possibly be toppled in a vote on Thursday.
