Frederiksen resigns from government after election defeat

The Social Democrat has thus cleared the way for the formation of a new government, which she would like to lead again herself. It is still unclear whether she will receive the exploratory mandate. Frederiksen's Social Democrats were once again the strongest party in the election. However, the result is not enough for a majority of the left-green camp.

"King's Round" begins

After the resignation of the government, the Danish king receives the heads of all twelve parliamentary parties one after the other in the palace for the so-called "royal round". They let Frederik X know who they support as the future head of government or head of the exploratory talks. On this basis, the monarch decides, according to tradition, who will be the first to attempt to form a coalition that does not have a majority against it. This will be Frederik X's first "royal round" after taking the throne in January 2024.
