In the capital Ankara, a ban on demonstrations and gatherings is in place for five days up to and including Tuesday (March 25), as announced by the governor's office. The same was also announced by the governor's office responsible for the port city of Izmir.
Following the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, a ban on demonstrations and gatherings was imposed for the metropolis on the Bosporus until Sunday. The Istanbul Governor's Office once again urged residents to avoid "unauthorized demonstrations". The authority threatened to take legal action against the disruption of public services.
Opposition continues to call for demonstrations
The Turkish opposition party CHP had called for nationwide demonstrations on Thursday evening. The CHP also called for further protests in Istanbul today.
On Wednesday morning, CHP politician Imamoglu was arrested on suspicion of terrorism and corruption. He has been in police custody ever since. He is considered a promising challenger to incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in future elections.
The CHP and observers accuse Erdogan's government of being behind the arrest in order to eliminate a political rival. The government rejects this.
