The host, Brazil, managed to include the most important points of its G20 presidency in the document: the fight against hunger and global warming as well as a reform of international organizations. In the meantime, it had been assumed that Argentina's ultra-liberal President Javier Milei would not agree to individual points.
The heads of state and government of the leading industrialized and emerging countries want to advocate effective taxation of the super-rich in future. They also reaffirmed the internationally agreed goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees.
In the final declaration, the G20 states also declared their intention to work towards a reform of the UN Security Council. The most important body of the United Nations should therefore become more representative, inclusive, efficient and democratic.
As at last year's summit in India, the Russian war of aggression was no longer explicitly condemned. At the meeting in Bali two years ago, a majority of countries did so.
The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty was also launched in Rio. According to the final declaration, there was neither a lack of knowledge nor resources, but rather a lack of political will to give people access to food.
