The aim of the plan is to put a stop to smugglers and the organized crime behind them through joint efforts, according to the final declaration following the meeting of the G7 interior ministers in Italy. The focus is on cooperation between the authorities of the countries of origin, transit and destination.
In a statement, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the importance of working together with all G7 countries to counter this phenomenon and its effects. This includes, among other things, further strengthening the operational capabilities of the security authorities.
In addition, relevant data should be exchanged even more closely with the migrants' countries of origin and transit. Stricter border management and monitoring are intended to thwart the routes of smugglers.
Together with social media
The role of social media in establishing contact between smugglers and migrants has become increasingly important in recent years. The action plan therefore also provides for increased cooperation with social media companies in order to prevent the online activities of smugglers and their networks that promote irregular migration and offer their services on relevant platforms and chat groups.
The G7 interior ministers also discussed topics such as international terrorism, organized crime in general, drug smuggling and hybrid threats such as disinformation campaigns.
The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal forum of the heads of state and government of seven major industrialized nations. These include Germany, France, the UK, Italy, Japan, Canada and the USA. Italy currently chairs the G7.
