In view of the stalemate in the ceasefire talks, Israel only wants to continue negotiations for a few more days, according to the Israeli Defense Minister. At the same time, Israel Katz threatened Hamas in the Gaza Strip to resume fighting against the Islamist organization. "If Hamas does not release the hostages soon, the gates of Gaza will be closed and the gates to hell will be opened," he said, according to his office. Israel has already stopped access for aid deliveries to the extensively destroyed coastal area.

Although Hamas had rejected a proposal by US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Israel had complied with the mediators' request and allowed a few more days of negotiations, Katz added. Witkoff's plan envisages the continuation of the ceasefire until mid-April in return for the release of hostages.

Hamas, on the other hand, is insisting on the immediate implementation of a second phase of the Gaza deal, which provides for an end to the war and the withdrawal of troops, and which should actually begin at the beginning of March. However, the two parties to the conflict have not yet negotiated the key points. Israel wants to persuade Hamas to accept Witkoff's proposal.
