A Bundeswehr reconnaissance team for possible military exercises in Greenland is due to arrive on the island in the early evening. The question is whether the Arctic is safe and to what extent Germany and its NATO partners can contribute to this, said a spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense in Berlin.

He mentioned flights with the German Navy's P-8 Poseidon maritime reconnaissance aircraft as a possibility. "The deployment of frigates or other naval units for maritime surveillance is also conceivable. Theoretically, the deployment of Eurofighters is also possible," said the spokesperson.

The reconnaissance mission of several European NATO allies is being led by Denmark, to which the island, which is largely covered in ice, belongs. Norway, Sweden, Finland, Great Britain, France and the Netherlands are also sending soldiers.

The German side includes logisticians and experts from various fields, as the ministry spokesman said. The 15 men and women had made a stopover in Denmark for initial talks with the partners. They are now to examine the situation on the ground.

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly made it clear that America wants to annex the island - something that the European NATO partners vehemently reject. Crisis talks between the USA, Denmark and Greenland ended largely without results.
