The German Armed Forces have taken off for Greenland with a reconnaissance team. An A400M transport aircraft flew off with soldiers on board, according to the German Press Agency (dpa).

The soldiers are to be taken to the capital Nuuk, but will make a stopover. The Ministry of Defense in Berlin had announced the evening before that 13 soldiers were to be sent.

"The aim is to explore the framework conditions for possible military contributions to support Denmark in ensuring security in the region, for example for maritime surveillance capabilities," the ministry said.

Following unsuccessful crisis talks between the USA, Denmark and Greenland, Germany and other European countries are thus pressing ahead with a military reconnaissance mission on the Arctic island lasting several days. The talks in Washington on the conflict over the Arctic island ended on Wednesday without a solution.

In November, the German navy put the first aircraft of the new P-8A "Poseidon" maritime patrol aircraft into service. The aircraft enables the crew to monitor large sea areas, track ship movements and locate submarines using radar as well as acoustic and optical systems.
