MEP Fabio De Masi has been elected as the new chairman of the Alliance Sahra Wagenknecht party. The 45-year-old received 93.3 percent of the votes cast at the BSW national party conference in Magdeburg, according to the conference chairman. The previous co-chair Amira Mohamed Ali was confirmed in office with 82.6 percent of the vote.

Both will lead the BSW together in future. The background to this is the withdrawal of party founder Sahra Wagenknecht from the federal chairmanship. For the time being, she only wants to chair a basic values commission within the BSW.

Mohamed Ali and De Masi are both 45 years old and used to be members of the Left Party together with Wagenknecht. Both were founding members of the BSW in January 2024.

The party had its first successes in the European elections and the state elections in Thuringia, Brandenburg and Saxony in 2024. It co-governs in Brandenburg and Thuringia. However, it fell just short of the five percent threshold in the federal election in February 2025.
