It has been agreed to contribute at least 150 million euros (around 139 million Swiss francs) to a new package of the so-called Purl Initiative, said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius after a meeting with counterparts from key European countries and EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas in Berlin. It was clear that Ukraine would not be left alone.
Commenting on the current Russian attacks on the country, Pistorius said that Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin is currently very clearly aiming to make the winter as unbearable as possible for Ukraine and to break the Ukrainians' will to resist. More contempt for humanity is hardly imaginable.
Germany complies with Trump's demands
The so-called Purl Initiative provides for ammunition and weapons manufactured in the USA to be sold to European allies and Canada - who would then make them available to Ukraine. Purl stands for "Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List". In German, this means something like: Prioritized Requirements List for Ukraine.
The initiative was launched to meet the demands of US President Donald Trump. He is of the opinion that the USA has had far too large a share of support for Ukraine in the past and wants the other allies to pay for further US military aid.
Germany had already pledged 500 million US dollars for the initiative some time ago. On Thursday, the Nordic and Baltic NATO countries pledged to finance a 500 million dollar package.

Pistorius had invited his counterparts from France, Great Britain, Italy and Poland as well as Kallas to the Group of Five meeting in Berlin. According to Pistorius, Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Schmyhal was also present as a guest. He reported on the situation in his country.
The meetings in a five-party format were set up following the election victory of US President Donald Trump. The aim is to strengthen European security and defense readiness. The dispute over how reliable the USA still is as an alliance partner has now been defused for the time being with the new and joint NATO defense plans.
