Driven by the wars in Ukraine and Gaza and the generally tense global situation, the world's 100 largest arms manufacturers once again sold significantly more heavy weapons last year. Their revenue from the sale of military equipment and services rose by 4.2 percent (adjusted for currency effects) to a total of 632 billion dollars (just under 600 billion euros) in 2023 after a decline in the previous year. This was announced by the Stockholm-based peace research institute Sipri in a report published on Monday.

According to the peace researchers, many arms companies have ramped up their production in response to the growing demand for weapons. According to the report, the significant increase in arms sales is likely to continue in 2024.
According to Sipri, around half of global arms sales were attributable to companies headquartered in the USA: after an overall increase of 2.5 percent, they amounted to a total value of 317 billion dollars (300 billion euros). However, the peace researchers observed particularly strong growth among arms companies from Russia and the Middle East. The four German companies in the top 100 achieved a combined increase of 7.5 percent to a total of 10.7 billion dollars (10.1 billion euros).
