Chief legal counsel Kathryn Ruemmler will leave the bank on June 30, as Goldman Sachs confirmed to the "Financial Times", the "New York Times" and the Bloomberg financial service, among others. Ruemmler was previously a prosecutor, lawyer and also legal adviser in President Barack Obama's White House.

The recent publication of large quantities of Epstein documents had made it clear that Ruemmler's connections to him were much closer than previously known. Among other things, emails revealed that she received expensive gifts from him and advised him on media issues. Ruemmler was working as a lawyer at the time. The 54-year-old has been Chief Legal Counsel at Goldman Sachs since 2021.

Epstein died in his New York prison cell after his arrest in 2019. The Wall Street Journal recently discovered an indication in the documents that Ruemmler was one of the people Epstein called immediately after his arrest. According to the newspaper, this emerged from handwritten notes by FBI employees that were published as part of the package of documents. Ruemmler's spokeswoman said of the report that she only had a professional relationship with Epstein and knew nothing of his crimes. Goldman Sachs had initially denied that Ruemmler could lose her job over the matter.
