US President Donald Trump has sent 300 National Guardsmen from California to Portland, according to California Governor Gavin Newsom. "They are already on their way there", criticized the Democrat and Trump opponent Newsom and spoke of an abuse of power by the government. The latter has not yet commented on this. Newsom announced that he would go to court.

Court bans deployment of soldiers from Oregon in Portland

The day before, a court in the neighboring state of Oregon had banned the Trump administration from sending National Guardsmen stationed in Oregon to Portland for the time being. The state of Oregon and the city had filed a lawsuit against the deployment ordered by the Trump administration. The Californian governor accuses Trump of evading the court ruling by taking National Guardsmen from California.

Trump repeatedly emphasizes that fighting crime on the streets is an important goal - and sends soldiers to cities governed by Democrats. He has already deployed the soldiers to contain protests against raids by the immigration authority ICE. In Portland, protests around an ICE facility had been growing.

Critics accuse Trump of using the National Guard to put on a show and intimidate political opponents. There are fears that the mood in the cities could heat up in view of ongoing ICE raids.

In the USA, the governors of a state normally have control over the National Guard. However, in the event of war or national emergencies, the US President can take command. The National Guard is a military reserve unit and part of the US armed forces. It can be deployed in the event of natural disasters, unrest or domestic emergencies.
