In Greece, around 500 people demonstrated in the port of Piraeus against the arrival of a cruise ship with Israeli tourists on board. Left-wing groups and trade unions as well as the Communist Party of Greece (KKE) had called for the protest.

The demonstrators criticized Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. They demanded that the Greek government cease all military, political and economic cooperation with Israel and recognize a state of Palestine. Riot police kept the demonstrators away from the pier where the ship was moored.

Criticism of the demonstrations

The "Crown Iris" had previously been greeted by demonstrators at numerous stops on Greek islands and at mainland ports. Yesterday, there were clashes with the police in the port city of Volos.

Many Greeks, politicians and tourism associations have criticized the protests. They argue that the people on board the "Crown Iris" cannot be held responsible for Israel's actions in the Gaza war. The actions are also damaging Greece's reputation as a friendly tourist destination.
