Green politicians are calling for a national climate conference for Switzerland. The federal government, cantons and municipalities, business and science and all parties should agree on binding climate protection measures.

The call, which was presented in Bern on Monday, is based on the latest climate scenarios for Switzerland, which were recently published. According to these, it could become warmer in this country than previously predicted. With the measures taken so far, global warming could reach 4.9 degrees by the end of the century.

National Councillor Marionna Schlatter (ZH) noted that politicians take note of scenarios and forecasts, but do not take responsibility. Yet global warming could be limited. "We know where to start, but global and national politics are not doing it," added Green parliamentary group leader Aline Trede.

The federal government, cantons, cities and municipalities, all political parties, business, science and civil society should be represented at the national climate summit, which should take place "without delay" in the words of the Greens. "It's about showing that politicians are taking the climate issue into their own hands," said Schlatter.

The goal must be a binding declaration with measures that can be adopted by a majority, said Trede. In addition to the summit, the Greens are calling for a scientific climate task force to regularly inform the Federal Council of effective ways to combat global warming. This is because all seven departments are affected.

The Greens are also calling for an independent national body to monitor the implementation of climate measures. Adaptations to climate change, such as flood protection, are indeed necessary, said National Councillor Christophe Clivaz (VS).

But more is needed: the reduction targets must be set higher and improvements must be made to the revision of the CO2 Act for the period from 2030. The Federal Council is not planning any new or higher levies. And a national offensive is needed to save energy.
