The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, believes he has a good chance of becoming the new Secretary-General of the United Nations. "I don't want to say that I already have the election in the bag," the Argentinian told the Italian daily newspaper "La Repubblica". "But I believe that I am a personality respected by all sides and that I have real contacts with everyone." The top post at the United Nations will be decided in the coming months.

The 64-year-old Argentinian made his candidacy to succeed UN Secretary-General António Guterres from Portugal official back in September. He now has the official support of his home country. Former Chilean President Michelle Bachelet and the former Vice President of Costa Rica, Rebeca Grynspan, have also registered their interest. The post will be filled on January 1, 2027.

Grossi: Security Council in "almost complete deadlock"

In the interview, Grossi pointed out that his previous work as head of the IAEA had put him in contact with all important nations, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. "At the UN, the power of initiative has been completely lost," Grossi criticized. A UN Secretary-General must engage in "active diplomacy". "The UN Security Council suffers from an almost complete blockade, as the USA, China and Russia very often hold opposing positions."

The office traditionally rotates between world regions. Latin America would be next in line. Until now, the United Nations has never been headed by a woman. Former German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) is currently President of the UN General Assembly in New York.
