In a spectacular case of espionage for Russia, two women and a man from Bulgaria have been found guilty in London. They allegedly acted on behalf of ex-Wirecard board member Jan Marsalek, as reported by the PA news agency.

They face prison sentences of up to 14 years. The sentence is yet to be announced.

According to the report, Marsalek acted as an intermediary between the Russian secret service and the leader of the spy ring. The ex-Wirecard sales director has gone into hiding since the bankruptcy of the former Dax group and is believed to be in Russia.

Marsalek himself was not charged in the London trial.

Espionage also in Germany

The defendants, aged 33, 30 and 39, were found guilty of espionage endangering life and national security. They are alleged to have spied on people and places of interest to Russia.

In Germany, this included an air force base and an unspecified embassy.

The espionage activities allegedly took place in London as well as in Stuttgart, Vienna, Valencia and the Balkan state of Montenegro. The accused had received considerable sums of money for this, the prosecutor had said during the trial.

Two other Bulgarians had pleaded guilty to espionage, but they were not brought to trial.
