The Israeli broadcaster Kan had previously reported, citing negotiating circles, that an Israeli negotiating team would leave for Egypt within a day. The Israeli broadcaster Channel 12 reported on the start of the talks on Sunday.
The talks are likely to focus on a whole range of contentious issues. Hamas accepted parts of Trump's peace plan on Friday evening, but did not comment on the demand for its disarmament. According to information from Hamas sources, this is a demand that can hardly be met.
Health authority: More deaths despite peace plan
Following Hamas' partial agreement to his peace plan, Trump had called on Israel to stop bombing the Gaza Strip immediately in order to facilitate the release of the hostages. However, according to information from the sealed-off coastal area, Israel continued to attack.
According to the Hamas-controlled health authority, at least 37 people died on Saturday, 26 of them in the city of Gaza. The information could not initially be independently verified.
An Israeli military spokeswoman said that a halt to the attacks had not been officially announced by the army. Israeli media had reported that the army had been ordered to halt the offensive to capture the city of Gaza.
