According to the Hamas-controlled Civil Defense, more than 70 Palestinians have been killed in new Israeli attacks in the Gaza Strip. These include women and children, said a Civil Defense spokesman.
The information cannot be independently verified. Dozens of people are still missing under the rubble. Residents reported heavy Israeli air strikes, particularly in the north and south of the largely destroyed coastal strip.
Israel also wants to increase the pressure on the Islamist Hamas with a renewed ground offensive in the Gaza Strip. The "extensive attacks" against Hamas members and the terrorist organization's infrastructure will continue throughout the coastal area, the army announced on Wednesday evening.
Since Tuesday night, Israel's army has been attacking targets of Hamas and its allied Islamists from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad with massive airstrikes. This effectively ended the ceasefire that had been in place since January 19.
Both sides blame each other for this: Israel accuses Hamas of repeatedly refusing mediation proposals for an extension of the ceasefire and the release of hostages.
The Palestinian organization, in turn, accuses Israel's government of unilaterally terminating the ceasefire.
