The civil defense, controlled by the Islamist Hamas, announced that thousands of tents for internally displaced persons were affected by flooding due to the heavy rain. A spokesman for the authority spoke of a catastrophe.

Palestinian and social media spread videos showing people in the Gaza Strip trying to get large amounts of water out of their tents with buckets.

A ceasefire has been in place in the Gaza war since October 10. However, many people are still living in precarious conditions in the largely destroyed area. Many makeshift dwellings offer no protection from the rain.

Gaza residents report wet tents and belongings

Her family's tent was flooded last night, says 32-year-old Amal Abu Hassan to the German Press Agency (dpa). "All our bedding, clothes and some of our food supplies have been ruined," says the desperate mother of four from the city of Gaza.

28-year-old Fatima al-Masri from the city of Deir al-Balah, which is located in the central part of the Gaza Strip, reports that the wetness is making life unbearable. Her children are coughing and the streets are flooded. Her family has lost everything and has not yet received any help, the young mother laments.

"We don't have a dry place to sleep"

45-year-old Ahmed al-Chatib also reports that his belongings are soaked. Even his furniture was destroyed by the rain. "We don't have a dry place to sleep," says the Palestinian from the town of Chan Junis in the south of the Gaza Strip. He also reports power cuts due to toppled pylons in his area.

Israel is also currently experiencing heavy rainfall and thunderstorms after a long period of drought. According to reports, several roads have been flooded. According to the media, there were delays to several flight landings at Tel Aviv airport due to the weather.
