Following the shooting of National Guardsmen in Washington, hundreds more soldiers are to be deployed to the capital. US President Donald Trump has instructed him to send 500 additional National Guardsmen, explained Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth. He would take the necessary steps.

Shortly beforehand, a gunman had opened fire not far from the White House. According to the authorities, two National Guardsmen are in critical condition. One suspect has been arrested.

More than 2,000 National Guardsmen are already deployed in Washington. Trump ordered them to the capital in the summer to combat allegedly rampant crime. Crime statistics do not support this narrative. Hegseth has now confirmed that the deployment has made the city safer. The attack in the city center will "only strengthen" the government's "determination", he said.
