Russian attacks have led to massive power cuts in the south of Ukraine during the night. According to the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy, the Dnipropetrovsk and Zaporizhia regions were almost completely cut off from the power supply. Around 800,000 consumers in the Dnipropetrovsk region were still cut off in the morning. Repair work to supply light and heat was reportedly continuing. The mayor of the city of Dnipro, Borys Filatov, extended the school vacations by two days due to the situation.
According to the authorities, electricity and heating supplies have been restored in the Zaporizhzhya region. Governor Ivan Fedorov spoke of the first total blackout in the entire region for years.
This is Russia's war against the Ukrainian people and life in Ukraine, wrote Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on social media - an attempt to break Ukraine. There are no military reasons for such attacks on the energy sector and infrastructure, which leave people without electricity and heating in winter.
In addition to the Russian attacks, the weather is also causing problems for Ukraine's energy supply. As a result, settlements in the Chernihiv, Kiev, Ivano-Frankivsk and Transcarpathia regions are completely or partially without electricity, according to the Ministry of Energy.
Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for almost four years with Western help. Russia has repeatedly targeted the neighboring country's energy infrastructure. Kiev is constantly pressing its international partners for the delivery of further air defense systems.
