India has criticized the announcement of additional US tariffs as unfair. The Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi expressed disapproval that the US government had made the South Asian country a target because of its oil imports from Russia. "We emphasize that these actions are unfair, unjustified and unreasonable." India wanted to take all necessary steps to protect its national interests.
It went on to say that imports from Russia were based on market factors and were made with the "overarching objective of ensuring energy security for 1.4 billion Indians". The government had already made this position clear beforehand.
US President Donald Trump had previously ordered that the new duties of 25 percent would come into force 21 days after the decree was signed today. Trump had previously announced tariffs of the same amount on Indian imports. With the 25 percent now announced, the rate would double to a total of 50 percent.
With this step, US President Donal Trump wants to further weaken the Kremlin's economic base by putting more pressure on large customers in the energy sector in particular, such as China and India. Russia has been waging a war of aggression against its neighbor Ukraine for more than three years and keeps its war machine running primarily by selling its raw materials, especially fossil fuels such as oil and gas.
