Institute: Europe maintains aid for Ukraine

In May and June, the aid provided amounted to around 12.6 billion euros (around 11.9 billion Swiss francs), according to the Ukraine Support Tracker published by the Kiel Institute for the World Economy (IfW) in Germany. According to the data, there was no support from the USA during this period.

However, European aid was lower than in the previous months of March and April. In March, support had increased sharply, partly to compensate for the lack of aid from the USA. According to updated figures, European aid amounted to around 19.9 billion euros in March and April.

IfW Kiel records military, financial and humanitarian aid. The survey began on January 24, 2022, i.e. one month before the start of the invasion in violation of international law. The data includes more than 40 countries, including the EU states, the USA and Japan, as well as the EU. Data sources are government agencies and media reports.

Increasing deliveries from industry

The IfW researchers note that military aid is increasingly being organized via orders to arms companies. In such cases, goods do not have to be taken from stocks. "Military aid for Ukraine is increasingly determined by the capacities of the defense industry," said Taro Nishikawa, head of the project, according to the press release.

According to IfW Kiel, at least 4.6 billion euros of the military aid allocated in May and June, which amounted to around 10.5 billion euros, will flow into orders for defense companies. The orders mainly went to companies in Europe and Ukraine.
