The International Criminal Court has strongly condemned the sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump. This threatens the independent and impartial legal work of the court, the institution declared in The Hague.

It called on all of its 125 member states to stand united behind justice and fundamental human rights. Trump had justified his punitive measures by claiming that the court had "abused its power" by issuing arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and then Defense Minister Joav Galant. The USA and Israel do not recognize the court.

Last year, the court issued international arrest warrants for Netanyahu, Galant and senior Hamas leaders for alleged war crimes in the Gaza war.

Financial sanctions and entry bans

Among other things, Trump has now ordered sanctions against employees of the court and those involved in investigations against US personnel or its allies such as Israel. Assets are to be frozen. US companies are banned from financial and business transactions with employees of the court. Individuals affected by the sanctions will be banned from entering the USA.

The court assured its employees of its full support. "The court stands firmly by its staff and pledges to continue to offer justice and hope to millions of innocent victims of violent crimes worldwide in all of its proceedings."
