In response to a resolution condemning Tehran's lack of cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Iran's foreign ministry and nuclear organization jointly announced that the country would build a new, third enrichment facility for uranium "in a safe place". This was reported by the Isna news agency.
The existing uranium enrichment facilities in Iran are a growing concern for Western countries. Although the Islamic Republic does not officially aspire to nuclear weapons, it produces uranium that is almost suitable for weapons.
The IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna had stated in the resolution that Iran was not fulfilling its obligation to disclose its entire nuclear program to the IAEA. It also threatened to refer the matter to the UN Security Council.
Iran strongly condemned the resolution. It was based on unfounded accusations that were politically motivated rather than technical in nature, the statement said. Iran would not leave these unfounded accusations unanswered and would take appropriate measures. Iran had also previously threatened to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.
