Iran's armed forces have begun a major maneuver on the south coast. According to the government, infantry troops, armored units, air defense forces and naval units are taking part in the military exercise. The exercise area includes the Makran coastal region as well as parts of the Gulf of Oman and the Indian Ocean.

Naval units of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) had already held naval maneuvers in the Persian Gulf in January. In the past two months, the air defense forces have also rehearsed their operational readiness around important nuclear facilities.

Dispute over nuclear program - religious leader rejects negotiations

In view of the military tensions with arch-enemy Israel, fears of war have recently grown in Iran. Israel's government has repeatedly threatened to attack Iranian nuclear facilities. This is due to fears that the Islamic Republic could be seeking nuclear weapons. The conflict is also driving up prices and fueling economic concerns among many Iranians.

US President Donald Trump had signaled a willingness to talk in the dispute over the nuclear programme. Iran's head of state Ayatollah Ali Khamenei initially officially rejected negotiations. However, observers speculate whether talks are already being prepared in the background.
