Iran has once again executed a suspected spy for the Israeli secret service. According to the justice portal Misan, the death sentence was carried out this morning. Israel waged war against Iran for twelve days in June and bombed key nuclear facilities together with the USA. After the war, Iran's judiciary charged many men with alleged espionage for Israel or sentenced them to death. At least ten people have already been executed in this context. The basic conflict between the arch-enemies continues despite the ceasefire - a diplomatic solution is not in sight.
Human rights groups have long criticized the massive use of the death penalty in Iran and accuse the authorities of using executions primarily as a means of intimidation. According to the Human Rights Network, more than 2,000 people were executed last year - the highest number in decades. Other Iranian activists put the number of executions in 2025 at more than 1,500.
