What is known so far
On Friday, an incident occurred off the coast of the United Arab Emirates involving an oil tanker that suddenly changed course towards Iran. According to the UKMTO information service operated by the British Royal Navy, the incident could be classified as "state activity". The management company responsible for the tanker announced after the incident that it had lost contact with the "Talara".
In the past, the Iranian Revolutionary Guards have repeatedly detained foreign tankers in the Strait of Hormuz. Sometimes political motives have also played a role. In 2021, for example, Tehran used the seizure of a South Korean tanker as leverage to force the release of billions in frozen funds in Seoul.
Since the Israeli attacks in June, Iran has also repeatedly threatened to close the Strait of Hormuz - a measure that would have a massive impact on international oil trade.
