According to US President Donald Trump, an agreement on an end to the war with Iran is possible in the coming days. At the same time, however, Trump threatened Iran again in an interview on PBS: if there is no deal, we will have to start bombing Iran "into the ground again". Iran rejected reports of an imminent agreement as exaggerated. A US negotiation proposal was being examined. CNN reported that Iran is expected to hand over its response to the Pakistani mediators today.

Meanwhile, the Israeli air force attacked a suburb of the Lebanese capital Beirut for the first time since a ceasefire with the pro-Iranian Hezbollah militia began three weeks ago. According to Israeli sources, the target was a high-ranking commander of Hezbollah's Radwan unit. The Israeli TV station Chadschot 13 reported that, according to Israeli information, the Radwan commander Malek Balut, his deputy and other Radwan fighters had been killed. Hezbollah circles confirmed to the German Press Agency that a commander had been killed in the attack.
The war in Lebanon is closely linked to the war in Iran, as Iran is Hezbollah's most important supporter. It was initially uncertain whether the latest attack would influence the negotiations on an end to the Iran war.
According to a transcript of a telephone interview with the US broadcaster PBS, Trump said that an agreement with Iran could possibly be reached before his planned trip to China next week. They are "very close". At a press conference in the White House, he described the latest talks with Iran as "very good". "It is very likely that we will make a deal," he said.
Waiting for Iranian reaction
According to media reports, the White House is currently waiting for a reaction from Iran to a unilateral declaration of intent with 14 points. Among other things, the aim is to create a framework for negotiations, initially lasting 30 days, to end the war.
An easing of US sanctions and agreements on the future of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz are also being discussed. In addition, a basis for nuclear negotiations is to be created.
However, according to the Iranian news agency Isna, Iran's foreign ministry spokesperson Ismail Baghai had previously rejected reports that both warring parties were close to concluding an agreement as exaggerated.
Trump: Iran must not have nuclear weapons
According to Trump, there is movement on the US demand to restrict Iran's nuclear program. He said in the White House that Iran had given assurances that it would not seek nuclear weapons. "Iran must not have a nuclear weapon (...) and they have agreed to that," he said. However, this has not been confirmed by the Iranian side. However, the leadership in Tehran has maintained for many years that Iran's nuclear program is purely civilian in nature.
Trump went on to say that Tehran had also agreed to other points - the Republican left open what these were. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also emphasized that the primary goal remains the complete removal of highly enriched uranium from Iran and the reduction of its enrichment capacities.
Mohammed Bagher Ghalibaf, Iran's parliamentary speaker and his country's chief negotiator, appeared to mock Trump's optimistic predictions of an agreement. Referring to Trump's recent statements, he wrote on the X platform that Operation Trust had failed and that it was now back to the mode of deception.
USA puts Iranian-flagged tanker out of action
Tensions in and around the Strait of Hormuz continue despite the suspension of a US operation there. According to the US military, it attacked an unladen Iranian-flagged oil tanker and put it out of action. Several shots were fired at the ship by a US fighter plane after it ignored warnings from the USA that it was violating the US naval blockade, the regional command responsible for the Middle East (Centcom) announced on Platform X.
The tanker had passed through international waters and was heading towards an Iranian port on the Gulf of Oman, it said. "The US blockade against vessels attempting to enter or leave Iranian ports remains in full force," the US military emphasized.
Trump had surprisingly announced on Tuesday evening (Washington local time) that he would suspend the US operation for the safe passage of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which began on Monday, "for a short time". During the suspension of "Project Freedom", the aim is to examine whether an agreement with Iran can be concluded.
Following mutual attacks in the Strait of Hormuz, fears had grown that the ceasefire, which has been in place for around a month and was recently unilaterally extended indefinitely by Trump, could fail. The strait is of crucial importance to the global economy due to exports of oil and liquid gas from the Persian Gulf states, among other things. Iran has practically brought shipping in the passage to a standstill with attacks and threats since the start of the war.
